HOW MUCH does an architecT cost?
Are you thinking about starting a home project but unsure what to budget for architectural services? You're not alone. Many homeowners overlook the cost of an architect when planning their project. At District Artisans, we believe in transparency—so let's break down what architects do, why their services matter, and how architectural fees can impact your overall budget.
What is an architect?
Before we talk about fees, it’s important to understand what it takes to become a licensed architect—and why their expertise is worth the investment.
Just like doctors or lawyers, architects are licensed professionals. They bring years of education, training, and practical experience to every project. It’s also important to note that architects differ from draftspersons—who may draw plans but aren’t licensed to design or oversee construction to the same degree.
Path to becoming a licensed architect
step 1: Earn a Degree
Aspiring architects must complete a degree from a school accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). These programs include:
A five-year undergraduate architecture degree (B.Arch), or
A one- to three-year graduate program (M.Arch)
After earning the degree, the individual registers with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) to begin the licensure process.
STEP 2: Gain Professional Experience
Next, they must complete over 3,000 hours of supervised work experience—tracked through the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)—under licensed professionals.
STEP 3: Pass the Licensing Exams
While gaining experience, they begin taking the six Architect Registration Exams (ARE) required for licensure.
STEP 4: Apply for Licensure
Once exams and experience requirements are met, they can apply for licensure in their chosen state.
STEP 5: Complete Continuing Education
Even after licensure, architects must complete continuing education each year to stay up-to-date and maintain their license.
